Tight spot on a chain! new chain?

    Hello Folks,

Just checking the girlfriend's bike (bmw f650 strada) and noticed the chain looked a bit slack. Checked the swing for the tolerance (20-30mm), then adjusted the chain. Finally, checked for tight spots and notice one spot where theres almost no moment in the chain. Turn the wheel abit, and chain falls back into the range!

Pretty sure this means new chain and sprocket!? Correct or have I done something odd?

    Thanks

    Billy

More than likely new chain and sprockets as I cant think of anything else that would make it so tight ,(was the bike standing for a long time?)
because the chain might have got rusty at some point and damaged one side of the chain causing exessive wear

pretty much im afraid, but not immediately maybe. if you loosen it with oil and a good wiggle and it stays loose then keep it till it wears out. it'll wear out quicker is all

You should adjust the chain tension at the tightest spot in the chain. Yes, it will be too loose everywhere else bit it won't damage the output shaft bearing or snap the chain through excess tension. I'd get a replacement on there and check the sprockets out too.

Take it off and soak it in parafin or deisel overnight then work the stiff link it will free up, then make sure you give it a good lubing

Thanks AlanH and paulc! Booked it in to have the chain and sprockets replaced. Out of interest how difficult is it to fit a chain ( not the open clip type )and the sprockets?

    Cheers

Only real difficulty I've had is rivetting the final link.
You want it to be firmly in place, but not so much so that that particular link is more squashed than others...

You can buy a small tool to that which is not expensive.
