    xrv 750 choke question

I have read many of the post about chokes and choke problems and i have several questions.
all of my plugs show signs of running severly rich. encountered a previous owners attempt to repair the black plastic dealy at the end of the choke cable. Not sure how the choke cable works, i see the choke slides in the closed position, so i assume the vacuum on the diaphram opens the choke slides and if you use the choke how does it maintain the choke closed? i presume it is normal to see the slides closed when not under power?
I would like to disable the chokes but really dont fully understand how to do it. will i have to remove the broken piece of plastic still in the carb? help please I am up in the mountains of Panama a long way from professional help

Remove the plastic parts out of the carb.

Remove the choke plunger and spring from the end of each cable.

Remove the slotted protective covers from the front brake calipers. They are screwed in over the top of the pad holding bolt.

Without slipping and firing them across the room, put the little brass plunger and spring into the holes that the plastic choke body originally screwed into. Use the bit you have taken from the front brakes to screw into the hole.

    Re: xrv 750 choke question

thanks, seems the plastic piece is keeping the spring and plunger inside. so should i have to cut the cable in order to remove the carbs?
do the rubber covers from the caliper simply plug the hole or do they maintain a certain pressure on the spring and plunger? does that plunger keep the choke slide from opening when the choke is applied?

is my understanding of the choke operation correct in that when the motor is not running the chokes are closed? and after i disable the choke slide is closed but when cranking they will open fully or am i missing something here?

thanks in advance, just trying to get this thing to return better than 30 mpg along with a cleaner burn.

OK when you pull the choke lever towards the bars it pulls on the cable and then pulls the small plunger outwards so giving the bike choke. Pushing on the lever on the bars closes the plunger and so effectively releases choke.

To remove the choke you need to lift out the cable and the punger - remove the cable from the plunger but retain the small spring. Replace the punger and spring and then screw in a bolt of the appropriate size - the same as the plastic part BUT it must seal up the hole so replacing the plastic part is no good as it has a gapping hole in it.

You can leave the old cable there just cable tie it loosely somewhere safe.

    Hope this helps

thanks, i got the good one out and now understand what y6ou are saying.
Also after more research now realize what i thought was a choke slide was in fact the throttle slide. And i supppose instead of a traditional choke plate the cv carbs use an enricher circuit to perform the same thing?! Thanks for your patience , but i had never seen a cv carb.

Hello....thanks for the reply! I will strip down my africa to change the sparkplugs (again) and check the choke cables....what did you use to "seal" the choke?? Because I didn't really understand how to do it

    Re: xrv 750 choke question

Ok Enrique, once you see the black plastic pieces and carefully remove them you you will understand what all of the other posts are explaining. once the plastic pieces were removed I cut the cable ends off and took out the spring and pin.
To close the opening after removing the plastic pieces i matched the plastic piece threads to a bolt and had the machine shop fashion 2 plugs with a screwdriver slot. I had to buy a new spring for one carbs as it was broken due to oxidation. REinserted the choke pins and springs and using the teflon tape wrapped plugs, reassembled it all and it fired right up first hit of the switch!! remember You need to ensure that there is sufficient spring tension on the pin to keep it closed.
