Easiest way to add a rectiefier fan?

Whats the easiest way to add a pc fan onto my rectifier that wont keep running when the bike is off? Run it from the rear light or something like that? Or will that dim the light too much?

    Thanks

Connect it between the feed for the rear brake light switch (black wire) and an earth (green).

would not bother.. another thing to fail and get bunged up with crud

Upgrade - FET Reg/Rec Transplant - Honda VFR Club

replace with a FET unit they run cooler

I managed to get hold of an FH0011AA of an 2006 R1 on flea bay.. size of a house brick but FET based and runs real cool suggest the FH0012 is the best route

its a flimsy piece of cr#p to fit, and youll have to check it working all the time! rip a heatsink from an old computer and mount it to the back of your r/r. post market r/r runs much cooler than originals in anyway.

Re: Easiest way to add a rectiefier fan?

I was given an impression that it's not the cooling that kills the RR but rather the burned-out connector to stator. RR can't dump the excess amperage there when resistance goes high and will then overheat. And heatsink is bandaid at most in that situation. (I know jack s*it about power electrics which never stopped me meddling..).

Another advice was to always run lights on (not just parking) to minimize the amount of power that RR must dump after battery gets its share. There is close to 300W to dump in some situations and I don't think there are many compact heatsinks/fans that can disperse that.

thats very true! most seem to bomb out starting with the bad connection at the plug (mine did and cooked the battery, charging at 23volts!). solder that as a first rule, then check if it still overheats. if it does, apply lights, if it still does, apply band aid!

Re: Easiest way to add a rectiefier fan?

Tut, tut tut - so much negativity on here!

I've had a PC fan running on my reg/rec for over 2 years now - no fancy mods or anything - just a bog standard PC fan held on by a home-made ally bracket and its never missed a beat it runs perfectly every time on a bike thats kept outside in Scotland and ridden all year round.

The simplest way to power it (i thought) was to find the ignition controled fuse in the fuse block under the LH side cover then take a feed off the ignition controlled side of that, thro ugh an in-line fuse just in case, to the fan and then off to earth. Simple, goes off when the igntion is off and
    works fine for me..........

The way I see it - the fans not cost me anything, its reliable enough and moves enough air to at least help if not significantly, then enough, but if it packs up I've not lost anything and if my reg/rec dies anyway so does everyones eventually so I've not lost there either

As per the below shot from my gallery.........

Re: Easiest way to add a rectiefier fan?

I have to agree with Stageonesimmo.I have a PC fan on my AT,it's only been there a short time but no problems yet. Before that I had a fan on the R/R of my VFR for three years,no problems there either. There is a relay for my heated grips next to the fusebox on my AT,I took the power for the fan from that.

Re: Easiest way to add a rectiefier fan?

The fan attached to the R/R was something I thought about a few years back and so put a std pc fan on it. However, it's almost 5 years on now and I'm back to same problem - R/R has gone. Now what to do, can't do this every 5 years surely...? Any other alternatives other than R1 model R/R?

Can we assume that what works in Scotland will be the same in other countries (Southern Hemisphere where temps are much higher).

Was thinking of moving the R/R from it's current location to get more airflow (in front of engine?) Anyone thought of doing or have already done that??

Re: Easiest way to add a rectiefier fan?

An idea I've seen on here used in warmer climes is to back the fan up with a mesh covered vent hole in the side panel to allow more air flow over the area - might be worth a shot.................
